These hoods have become expensive, and I plan on having the car judged, so Iwant to make sure I get the correct hood.
    Thanks,

My question is I’ve noticed that there is a difference between early and late hoods in 1969.
To open up my search, are 70 and 71 hoods the same as late 69?
I realize the holes for the 427 hood numbers are different than the 454 hood numbers and that an LT1 hood will have no holes.

But all other things considered, with the correct late 69 latches and hood release cable installed, is a 1970-71 BB hood the same
    as a late 69 hood?

I also realize that a 1972 had different hood latches and hood pins than the late 69 to 71 hoods (I believe?)

the hoods below are pulled from EBay. They aren’t hoods I’m considering, but they show the differences in BB hoods.

Yes, there is a difference between early and late 1969 hoods. However, late means VERY late. My original owner 1969 built in mid-September, 1969 has the "early" design. So, with respect to hoods, late 1969 means sometime after mid-September, 1969.

The "late" 1969 hoods are the same as 1970-71 for both small block and big block. The difference relates to the upper hood latches and the lock bolts on the lower hood latches. The 1968-E69 lock bolt heads were "tulip" shaped; the L69-72 lock bolt heads were cone shaped. Otherwise the lower latches are the same. In addition, the 1968-E69 right side upper latch was different as to mounting configuration compared to L69-71. That's the principal reason that the E69 and L69-71 hoods are different. Also, the E69 hoods had two mounting points for the lock cross-over cable retainers whereas the L69-72 had only one mounting point.

The 1972 hoods, both small block and big block, are the same as L69-71 except that the mounting location and configuration of the hood support attachment point are different as a different style hood support was used for 1972. The hood latches, both upper and lower, were the same as L69-71.

Curiously, 3 different small block and 2 different big block hoods were used for 1968. The small block hoods were GM #3914232, GM #3936370, and GM #3947960 (you won't find the 1st and 2nd of these in the 1968 AIM but they were used during that model year). The last one was the same as early 1969. The big block hoods were GM #3914323 and GM #3936372. Just how the early 68 hoods differed from the later 1968 and early 1969 hoods I do not know (but I wish I knew).

One thing to keep in mind: the L-69-72 lock bolts absolutely cannot be used with the 68-E69 upper hood latches. If they are, you might not be able to get the hood open, at all. If the 1968-E69 lock bolts are used with the L69-72 upper latches, the hood might pop open unexpectedly.

When did the hide-away wipers end and the hoods get extended?

1973. However, the L69-72 upper and lower hood latch assemblies continued to be used through 1976.
