    C1 Steering Wheel Restorer

Could I get recommendations for a good C1 steering wheel restorer? I'm hoping to get more than one recommendation since my wheel has been in the hands of a popular restorer for over two years and I think it may be time to try to get it back and send somewhere else.

    Thanks!

Rick, What year? 53-55 or 56-62?

If 56-62, you might consider doing it yourself?

See DoRD Stickey above, in the Update Page.

Thanks, Rich! There's more to the story.... I had the wheel nicely restored with the correct grain. Then I dropped it on a cement floor! What a sinking feeling that is. The result was circumferential cracks where it hit the floor.

I don't know. Maybe I'll have to try repairing it myself. The wheel is for my '62.

        Re: C1 Steering Wheel Restorer

Rick, Sorry to hear that. But we've all had some kind of "oops" over time. I once dropped a rare Jaguar V12 Butec alternator as I was taking it out of the box on a concrete floor, cracking its rare cast iron pulley. I was so upset at myself.

        It happens.

So, a few ideas. Can you post some photos of the cracks? Maybe repairable by filling and spot refinishing? If the "grain" was made up with a mold, you might be able to make a small mold yourself from a like-sized area from another section. Then apply a filler to the damaged area and carefully shape the edges and spot refinish it.

Now if it's a area in view when installed, here's a plan....

Remove the hub from the wheel. If it was removed during the restoration and repainted, then reinstalled using "threaded" rivets, you could re-clock the hub and reinstall the rivets so the repair flaw is at the bottom of the wheel when installed, unseen by the crowd.

Just a few ideas I can think of that may be feasible.

          Re: C1 Steering Wheel Restorer

I recently had Steering Wheel Bob (Bob Monetti) restore my 62 steering wheel. This was the third C1 wheel he has done for me.
Steering Wheel Bob provides expert steering wheel restoration for classic, antique, and custom cars (and boats!). Where old world craftsmanship meets modern technology.

If you are looking for cheap, Bob's not your guy. But if you are looking for great service and craftsmanship, Bob's the man.
I sent my steering wheel to Bob via FedEx on June 16th. It was returned to me about three weeks later in like new condition.

I don't think Bob is much on email, PayPal, credit cards, and the like. I've always had to contact him by phone and pay by Cashier's Check. These are only minor inconveniences in the overall scheme of things.

Try Chuck Pelton in West Bloomfield MI. Have not seen or talked with him for several years, but C1 wheel refurbishing was (is?) his long-time business venture & he's good. Think he has an eBay store 'Chuck-Pelton' that may help making contact. Say 'Hi' for me if you do so.

recently sent a 58 and 59 steering wheel to Mark Kinler at DelKin Motor Sports. they did a great job!

Their turnaround time was pretty awesome too; I shipped it out in July and we received it back in September.
