I'd look through your pail to find an appropriate pair. At least in my state a brand-new looking screw would be a serious red flag for a DMV inspection. Of course, if you already have a title and registration new screws would only be a potential problem for the next guy.

I do not have a 1954 AIM. Is there a part number shown in that AIM for the screws?

Not that I saw. The AIM manual for my 70s are so much more informative and complete, but that is 16 years of progress. Pacifica Corvette had them, and was going to buy a pair just to compare to. They are now discontinued and have no details on them.

          Corvette Central has them.

Corvette Centrals search is suboptimal in that when you search screw I only get one return. I had searched for VIN and body, and didn't think serial. Thank you for the direct link, and they are now on order (along with some other things needed) to compare things to.

1957 AIM shows p/n 273445 probably the same for '54, a #8-18 X 3/8 Type BT (thd cutting) pan head Philips similar to the sheet metal screw shown in CC's pic but with a different tip. The CC screw is a readily available common hardware store item, not something you'd need to order. Hope this helps some.

Original VIN tag screws were a self tapping pan head screw - as explained above
                EVERY 53 54 55 56 57 I take apart uses the same screw
                Very EASY to find -
