    Re: Real Axle Oil Leak

I would suggest before buying rear axle bearings from any Corvette supplier you check on the manufacturer of the bearing they supply.
I replaced my rear axle bearings last year on my '61 and when I inquired as to the bearing manufacturer, I ended up buying bearings from Rockauto.

I totally, 100% agree. I always look at Rock Auto for parts such as this. They usually have Timken or SKF bearings listed. Over the years I have bought various parts and have not had any issues. I recently bought clutches for the Chevelle and 56 Corvette and am very pleased with them.

The part numbers need to be the same, it relates to the size and type of bearing.

Last year, I was able to buy National Bearings rear wheel bearings from Rockauto, which are made by Federal Mogul and subject to their quality control. The CC bearings were from an unknown company, not a major bearing supplier in the US.

I just looked quickly and see that Rockauto has '57 rear wheel bearings from Timken and SKF. Another possibility is to go to a bearing supplier and give them the part numbers supplied by Tom Parsons.

This is a job you only want to do once.

            HI Dennis.

The Rock Auto site displayed the 57 bearing only, and the picture was the same China bearing as CC. I probably don't know how to use their website, I was unable to go further into it.

I googled on "Timken", which took me to a bearing finder site. I 'chatted' with a person, who located some. I asked him the country of origin. He said China. So I gave up.

I did not try SKF. Too frustrated to go farther.

I used the P/Ns RW-307-R and RW-607-NR, which should be correct.

Well, I just did not do it right. If you Google on the P/N, all kinds of them come up.

Some are e-bay, some say USA on them. Basically higher price, but is the way to go.

              Thanks for all your help.

Timkin hasn't made axle bearings for cars in the US in probably over 15 years. Their corporate office is in my backyard and I have talked to them about this several times in the past. Given the cost of US labor I doubt anyone is making them in the US. If they are I would like to know who!
