If my brake caliper supplier says "DOT 5 silicone brake fluid will void warranty" I'm not going to use it. Seems simple.

Yes, that's probably the thing to do if the warranty is important to you. However, if you ever accidentally spill some DOT 3/4 on your paint, you'll find out how fast that warranty will seem unimportant. Keep in mind that the brake fluid will mar your paint faster than you can get it off.

Has anyone sought warranty exchange with Lone Star, how was the experience, and what (if any) costs were involved?

I risked it all and knew I'd be using DOT 5 in my LS calipers when I ordered them. I figured I'd just have to rebuild whatever leaked with Raybestos EPDM kits (~$15 ea.). One caliper seal was delivered damaged but I didn't know it until a few months after installation. The seal sidewall was caught between the housing and the metal ring so had a small hole in it. It was easier to just change out the LS seals with the Raybestos and be done with it. Couple years later and all is still fine with that one and the other 3.

Gary, yes, lip seals. They've worked well for my '67 since the mid-'80s and hoping the same now for my '72.

                Owen,

Thanks for the clarification. One more question. Have you been explicitly told by Raybestos tech people that they use EPDM for their seals?

It would also be very important to learn from Raybestos if the seals are peroxide or sulfur cured.

It is/was in the description of the seals - I believe it's on Raybestos' website too.

                      Owen,

I tried unsuccessfully for 20 minutes this morning to see if Raybestos mentions the use of EPDM seals on their website. Failing that, I decided to try their LiveChat feature to talk with Tech Support. This is the brief exchange that followed.

That’s a pretty disappointing and uninformative reply. Maybe I needed a Level 1 or a Level 3 TechLine agent??? Obviously, the company knows what material they use.

It looks like you got the old spokesperson for "Subway" to respond. Has he been paroled and is this his new job

                          Leif,

Another distinct possibility these days is that my chat was actually with a non-human Bot, that had a limited list of canned answers to tech questions. That day is here for some companies.
