1966 starter brace & heat shield attachment to starter stud

If I leave that nut in place, and I install the brace and heat shield on the stud, there is a gap the thickness of that nut between the brace and the starter. Like shown here.

I’m trying to install the starter brace and heat shield on my ‘66 L79. The photo in the ‘66 JG seems to show the brace & heat shield mounted flush against the starter surface.

However, my 320 starter and most others I’ve looked at have an existing nut on the mounting stud on the face of the starter.

If I leave that nut in place, and I install the brace and heat shield on the stud, there is a gap the thickness of that nut between the brace and the starter. Like shown here.

Is that how it’s meant to be? Or am I supposed to remove the existing nut from the starter and re-use that nut to secure the brace and heat shield.

You could not get that "nut" off if you tried. Assuming the bolt is an original or an original replacement, the "nut"is an integral part of the bolt (referred to as "bolt with extension"). Originally it was GM #1941111 and, later, GM #1931654.

Thanks guys. I learned something today. Now that you tell me the starter nut is not removable, I can sort of see the gap and nut in the JG photo. The power of suggestion.
