    64 Shift console black paint

Need some help on my 64. The black paint area in the shift console seems to be thicker than just a regular spray application. Is this so, or is it because prior owners have painted it multiple times? There are a couple of indents in the paint 0 maybe cigarette burns, or whatever. Suggestions on how to restore?? Thanks in advance.

Remove the console (easy). Remove existing paint with acetone - do not use an abrasive or some other product that will damage the painted surfaces. The "leather" texture that is cast into the console surface is very shallow. You can't buff out scratches - if you do you will also buff out the fake texture. Paint with SEM Trim black - light coats, not many.

Thanks Ed. Just saw a 65 - there is no paint on the shift console - it is just natural color stainless?? with etched grains similar to leather. Is that where things went in 65 compared to 64?

64 - 67 consoles are made of a pot metal that is chrome plated. I think the "leather grain" texture was produced by the mold. The "grain" area of all 64 - 67 consoles were painted to match the interior color - the paint was applied over the chrome finish. 63 consoles had a brushed aluminum finish in the area where the grain appears in later models - no paint.
