Which came first? Engine Orange or Dull Aluminum Overspray on L79 intake edges

Can anyone confirm that the engine orange was applied first, so that at the front and rear edges of the manifold, the aluminum paint would appear to be sprayed on top of the engine orange?

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Gary,

Gary Engine Orange came first then if it was an aluminum intake manifold, then the silver was applied at the end of the engine painting line. It was painted from aerosol can. There have been numerous posts and threads regarding this subject. I actually purchased the last seven cans in the country and these were the originals that were used by Flint.

      Ron,

Thanks for the answer. If it had come down to guessing, I was going to assume that orange was first, then the dull aluminum.

Hi Gary. I agree; orange first, then the silver.

        Good luck with your project!

So, the aluminum intake manifold was painted with aluminum paint, not left bare aluminum>

Just the sides, as described in the JG.

it seems to me the JG writers must have thought there was little silver/aluminum at the front and rear. Otherwise, the engine orange overspray would not be visible. Or am I not interpreting the JG as intended?

                      Gary,

That could certainly be, but remember after 30, 40, or 50 years between the elements and the heat from the engine a lot of the silver paint was worn off as it was not intended to be heat resistance. Same goes for the orange. In fact, the engine orange paint was supplied by Sherman Williams code: JK4892 and is still available today. It could be true that the cars they looked at had silver paint worn off in the front and rear and there is more left on the sides. Either way is correct, because depends who had an aerosol silver spray can in their hand that day. The silver paint was applied at the end of the line, because the engine travels with travel covers And engine orange was drying
then they put on the aluminum valve covers. If you look at an original or correct restoration, there should be silver paint and only a little inboard of the valve covers.
