    63-66 Rag Joint casting question

I have a rag joint I am restoring. One half has the correct 63-66 casting 5686624. The other half has the casting 7813276. The first number is hard to read but I believe it is a 7.

Otherwise the two halve are dimensionally very similar. The one with casting number 7813276 has an extra cutout above one of the rivet/bolt holes and the two other cutouts are the same size side to side on this casting. The correct 5686624 casting has the same two cutouts, but one is smaller than the other.

They both have the same spline count and fit the steering shaft and steering gear box input shaft. I have searched for the 7813276 and have not found any reference.

Anyone have a clue what this is from?

Also, I'm trying to decide if there is any reason not to use it for the rag joint rebuild?

The embossed numbers on these upper flanges do not represent finished part numbers for the part. They are merely casting numbers (i.e. part number for the casting).

The finished part number for the 5686624 casting is 5690811. Unfortunately, I have no way to cross reference the 7813276 to a finished part number to determine application. I can say that I think it's a post-1966 application.

      Thanks Joe,

Yes I was aware that the casing and part numbers are different. In most cases a good google search of the casting numbers will turn up something. But in this case - Nothing!

It may not even be a Chevrolet part, but it clearly came from a very similar mold and fits as part of the steering coupler assembly.

Both are GM's old Saginaw Steering Division casting numbers. So, the liklihood is great that it's original for some GM application, not necessarily Chevrolet.
