For someone like me who has never applied one, can you describe your technique? I did just buy extras, so I can mess up once or twice. but I’m sure there must be some tips in addition to having a meticulously clear surface. Any tools to have handy?

And how exactly must it be positioned to make the judges happy?

To apply the label, mix some Dawn kitchen soap in a spray bottle with water. Spray the area where the label is to be applied so the entire surface is wet. Carefully lift your label and place it on the valve cover over the wet soap.

The soap and water mix allows you to slide the label around without tearing. The label will start to stick as soon as the soapy water disapates (typically a few seconds). This should give you sufficient time to property position your label.
