Re: Testing Lone Star Caliper O-rings in DOT 4 Brake Fluid
I'm just happy to see a manufacture/rebuilder listening to outside information and acting on it versus ignoring and going about business as usual. Should they have investigated this issue on their own (without proding) when they knew there was a problem with their current o-rings...probably. But if they can satisfy themselves that this is the solution and they, then, implement the change it's a win/win for everyone involved. Can we agree on that?Leif

Re: Testing Lone Star Caliper O-rings in DOT 4 Brake Fluid
I posted a question earlier tonight about caliper failure and was directed to this discussion. I did not mention the vendor BUT it WAS Lone Star and I purchased 3 sets of calipers from them at Corvette Expo back in the Spring. I spoke with Ken this past week and he assured me that there was no problem with the seals, that they haven't changed in decades and both the lip and o ring type will fail with today's available DOT 5. He said that if I in fact have the 20+ year old DOT 5, which I do, still in sealed containers that the calipers would be fine. I have at least 2 leaking that have only been wet with the OLD DOT 5 for a week and have only been driving on and off my trailer twice and in and out the door of the alignment shop. The conversation with Ken was last month (Sept 2024) and he stated it's fluid and not seals. I'd love to hear of any updates.- Top

Re: Testing Lone Star Caliper O-rings in DOT 4 Brake Fluid
I think this is more proof that there is a problem with the seals. DOT 5 fluid has not changed, but Lonestar thinks your 20 year old fluid is different from contemporary fluid. Do these calipers use O-ring or lip seals? The O-rings are not compatible with DOT 5 fluid but failure in cold fluid should not occur quickly. My Lonestar O-ring calipers have not started leaking yet after 5 years in silicone fluid in a seldom driven car. I am guessing that you have lip seal calipers, and there is some problem with the lip seals or bore surface or size. The lip seals are probably EPDM rubber which actually is compatible with DOT 5.I posted a question earlier tonight about caliper failure and was directed to this discussion. Re: Testing Lone Star Caliper O-rings in DOT 4 Brake Fluid
Thanks for the reply Patrick. I have never used O Ring seals until now and have lip seals on my other cars, several that were done in the late 80's with DOT 5 and no issues so far (knock on wood). I ordered the O ring type this time at the recommendation of several people and the boxes are marked O ring.- Top
