74 454 Factory Installed Spark Plug Shields

    Good Day All -

Trying to find out which shape the spark plug heat shields were factory installed on the 74 454. I am seeing two slightly different configurations (shapes) listed as correct for the 74 BB. It is hard to tell the original shape from the judging guide pictures.

    #336716 and #465840

Thanks Jimmy P for sending me pics of the older and newer version but am confused on which of the these two were factory installed.

    Thank you/Vic

The original spark plug shields for 1974 were GM #331716. The GM #465840 replaced the 331716 for SERVICE in January, 1982.

        Joe,
Or anyone else for that matter
Were the LS4 spark plug heat shields installed on the engines at Tonawanda before shipping them out? I ask because unless I missed it somewhere I couldn’t see any photos of them or part numbers in my 71,73, or 74 AIM’s. Don’t have an 72 AIM. IIRC these weren’t used on 68-70 C3’s. All the shielding and part numbers are pictured and listed for the 350’s. Just wondering! Thanks

The spark plug barrel shields were installed at Tonawanda (as were the spark plugs).

Joe since my shields were missing - would you know the bolt size to install these shields to the 454 block?

The shields are retained by the exhaust manifold bolt nearest each shield.

If they are the same I have a few originals off of a '72, very rusty. They are not reproduced but someone here (I can't remember who) sent me a template and a sample with a description of how you can alter the earlier ones (shown above) to look like the oroginals. I made a set for myself and they came out pretty good. I'm away from home for the week but if you're interested I can help you out.

Saw these on ebay, is this what you want?

                        Good Morning All,

I recently acquired this set of shields. I don't know what Chevrolet model these were factory install on. They are not for C2 big block engines but I was wondering if they were ever installed on any C3? Sure sounds like you'd be the guys who would know.

                        Thanks, Mike

Your photos show GM #3993332 spark plug shields. These were used primarily on trucks with big block engines beginning about 1972 and continuing for many years thereafter. It's even POSSIBLE that these were used on early 1973 Corvette LS-4 but I cannot document that. The GM #3993332 was never catalogued for a Corvette application.

The shields shown in the eBay ad are not the type used on 1965-66 Corvette big blocks. 1967-E72 Corvette big blocks used no spark plug shields.

L-72 to early 1973 MAY have used the shields pictured which are, apparently, reproductions of the GM #3993332 shields.

L73 (if not all 1973) to 1974 big blocks used shield GM #331716 which are configured somewhat differently than the 3993332.
