The pool of greased backed hair (we’re all bald now but)with a pack of Marlboro tucked under their T shirt sleeves, listening to songs of the 50’s and 60’s, is or should be the main target. A direction reaching out to those folks, that belong to other car clubs, be it Ford Chrysler Ferrari etc. could result in new “club type of members” vs the invisible “young”. Yes I know you’re a kid! Re: TDB participation

I thoroughly enjoy the TDB. I've been using it religiously since I joined NCRS. I've gotten better with the search function and I always find my answers weeding through the vast amounts of archived data there.

Thanks to all who have schooled me. I sincerely appreciate all the help you've given me through the years via this site.

Many NCRS members (including myself) post over at CorvetteForum... essentially, we've become our own worst enemy.
Why do people need to join/post here on the TDB, when all the info is freely given out over at CorvetteForum?
... And the dissemination of info (especially directly from Judging Guides) is rampant... so therez no need for them to join NCRS.

              <snip>

The National Corvette Museum and CorvetteForum cater to a much larger crowd... we are just a small subset of the Corvette Community.
Unless we have a better plan, and people actually step up to HELP (instead of just complaining), we'll ultimately face dire circumstances.
I disagree that we are our own worst enemy by posting on CF rather than attempting to hold all knowledge within the walls of NCRS. I believe it's that type of mindset that leads the general Corvette community to see the NCRS as a bunch of secretive elitists. Providing information from knowledge or even the judging guides builds community and helps dispel the notion of the snobbish NCRS. The threads offering specific restoration detail is often accompanied by recommendations to get the applicable judging guide. These sorts of replies also allow the readers to see the quality and detail of the guides and, by default, the organization.

We are primarily a tiny group of history buffs who desire to restore and maintain the cars as they were when Chevrolet rolled them out the door. On CF, most owners have not developed that interest and just want to enjoy their Corvette. Quite a few want to keep them looking original but aren't willing to spend time or money to ensure the perfectly dated part. They want a solution to the problem at hand to get them back on the road.

My story is that 30+ years ago I became a member –then lapsed for quite a few years– and have never participated in person. I joined NCRS and renew for the guidance and historical stories. I love the history and nostalgia of the times my cars were built. I attempt to maintain them as original representations of that time and culture but don't have the financial means to do the meets, traveling, and the kind of restoration that judging requires.

Thanks Mike, I'll try my best, although overall I feel we all have a tough road ahead to stay in the race.

I have to give Duke the credit for starting this thread with interest in getting ideas for improvement. It made me think more about how we can improve things here, as well as the entire organization.

I think we've all been thinking what Duke wrote, all along. I feel he gave us a needed "kickstart".

P.S. I have a few more ideas to help get new members in which I'm going to run by management. I'll report back after I get reactions.

                  Re: TDB participation

I have heard zero comments of the TDB going away. I don't get on this site every day, more like once a week or so. I believe the majority of the members have never been on the TDB. Some do not read the Restorer or Driveline. You are lucky if you get 30% to vote in a regional director election. You could research how many members are on this site in a given week. Guessing it is 1-2% of membership. I am on Facebook practically every day, mostly for entertainment and keeping up with friends and NCRS members. Regional directors from regions 6 and 7 are also on Facebook and on one or more of the NCRS Facebook pages. The 1967 Team Leader is on the C2 Facebook page and does answer questions on members posting questions. Being Facebook friends with these 3 gentleman helps build relationships as well as gaining knowledge on corvettes. We are attempting to market our club better and my goal is to grow the membership in my region. It sounds like we need to improve marketing for the TDB in addition to improve marketing nationally. I will pass that on to the board.

                    Re: TDB participation

Good insights Mike. As I mentioned earlier, my biggest priority would be to increase in person participation in chapter, regional, and national meets.

I think a conversation needs to happen with board members, team leaders, etc. on why they don't regularly frequent and contribute to the TDB. It's hard to fault the general members when leadership isn't here either.

                      Mike,
What is the appeal of Facebook to keep in touch with NCRS members and friends? What keeps you from visiting the forum on a daily basis? I don't think any level of marketing is going to bring members to the TDB if FB offers something unique.

                      Thanks, Owen

For instance Owen, when you post something on FB only your friends see it so you can be much more broad in your posts, and they are not moderated and judged for "relevance" like the TDB.

I bet if you could poll the entire NCRS active membership, the percentage of those members who have a Facebook account would be negligible. I, and most folks I know, absolutely despise social media.
