    57 Three Speed Transmission

Were the 1957 3 speed transmissions and/or tail pieces painted? I can't find anywhere this is discussed.

Quick scan of the judging manual gives no indication of paint except for std trans bell housing, engine color. Believe it was painted as part of the engine assy in Flint. AFAIK, trans case and tail were unpainted

That is correct. The JM does not have information. However, if it is hot tanked by your machine shop, it will rust. A light coat of Cast Iron Gray engine enamel spray paint will solve the rusting and produce a finish that is hard to identify that there is paint on it. It appears to be bare cast iron.

agree with Rod and Joe, the 3 speed 57 corvette trannys were unpainted, have provision on tail housing to mount the shifter ,and all were close ratio gear sets. mike

As has been said before, and after, rebuild no paint on my 57 3 speed.

Basic rule for painting was "if a prospective buyer could see it, marketing wanted it to be painted".

Once told to me by John Hinckley.
