C2 Side Window Vertical "Play"

I have a question concerning what is the most likely cause of C2 side window vertical looseness. Specifically, when my side window is about half-way open, you can lift on the glass and move it up (or down) at least a half-inch. Also, the side window handle will turn about an inch before it starts to move the glass (and the handle is not slipping on the tooth-tipped stud). There is no binding or difficulty in raising or lowering the side window glass. It's just loose vertically, and I expect that these windows did not leave the factory with this amount of "play."

I have searched the archives here and found a great deal of commentary on vent window play and how to rectify same (including the installation of a new gear and forcing that gear more tightly against the other gear). I've already fixed that problem, but my question here focuses on the side window. I also would appreciate any input concerning how much vertical play in the side window would be acceptable for passing a PV (as I've not found the answer to that question in the archives here or in the Judging Reference Manual -- unless I missed it).

I have the door panel off, but the side window regulator is still installed inside the door panel. Knowing how hard it is to get everything back in the door and adjusted), I would prefer not to take it all apart if there is any easy fix (which frankly, I seriously doubt -- but hope springs eternal). I expect to hear that the nylon wheels could be deteriorated or that maybe the teeth on the side window regulator are worn. But it seems to me that the more likely culprit involves wear on the presumed gear mechanism enclosed inside the regulator (in similar fashion as typical vent window gear wear). Interestingly, it appears that the parts suppliers don't sell just a new gear (as with the vent window), but rather just the entire mechanism with the swinging arms (although the nylon wheels and circular part with the teeth can be purchased separately). (But if I'm wrong about that, please let me know the source of just the gear.)

Anyway, just trying to decide whether there's any way to likely repair what I have, or should I just bite the bullet and purchase the entire replacement mechanism(s). Again, my question concerns the side window, not the vent window. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you have correctly diagnosed the problem and identified the fix. The wear/play between the window crank gear and the teeth in the lift arm would need to be addressed in this case, replace the entire assembly. Not aware of anyone offering just the gear or if that would fix the wear issue in the teeth of the lift arm. Not sure all the PV judges check the vertical play in the door glass or what each of them would think is acceptable.

Thanks for responding, Gary. The “slop” is in both the drivers and passenger side windows, and is about equal in both (approximately half an inch vertically). As I mentioned, the gear almost necessarily must be part of the problem. I’m still hopeful for input here on whether 1) the gear alone can be purchased (and installed), and 2) what is the allowable “slop” for passing a PV? Thanks again. Mike
