    C1 Hinge Pop Noise

I replaced the door hinge tension springs and hinge pins and bushings on my 58 Corvette because one of the tension springs was broken and it was making a noise when closing the doors.

When the doors are fully opened it has some resistance when trying to close (tension spring) and you have to push hard to close and it makes a loud popping noise.

I read about greasing the hinges, so I applied some moly grease to the hinges but that didn't make any difference.

I read about using white lithium grease instead.

Anyone have this problem before and what did you do to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Well, I cleaned out the moly grease and applied white lithium grease. That seemed like it helped a little on the passenger door but didn't make any difference on the driver's side door.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Yesterday Jason and I concluded that the repro flat springs were made such, that they sat too high after assembling them with rivets to the hinges.

He's going to do the typical "do-over"....

By removing the flat springs, bending them flatter, reinstall with new rivets, then retry.

Jason where did you buy the spring metal flat springs? I got mine from Paragon before they were bought out, now Corvette Central (part 4910K). Only one broken spring needed done. I have not hung my doors but I noticed no difference in the springs at the time (few years back).

Rich, any suggestions on how I can flatten the springs?

I tried putting a C clamp around the spring and tightening it down. But once I removed the C clamp, the spring just goes right back to its shape.

Jason do you have a bench/shop press?

I don't have a shop press. I have been looking for an excuse to buying a harbor freight press

I bought one and it has come in handy for a number of things like this during the project.

Try lubricating all moving parts with KROIL. I had a similar problem after replacing the drivers door spring on a 1969. It would make a popping sound when closing the door. The KROIL lubricated everything so all the parts operated smoothly.
