    Capacitor

I have a 64 non-A/C convertible. I have a capacitor with DR and 60 on the butt of the capacitor. Having been trying to research for this number, but no luck. Any help on this, and if it is even one for the 64. Thanks in advance.

    Ron,
That's an ignition system capacitor...if memory serves mid '50s - early '60s cars. Six and eight cylinder.

      Ron,

Does it look like this on the end?

        Re: Capacitor

The capacitor I have is a new one - the only letters on the end is DR & 60. Would someone confirm or not my conclusion that all capacitors are either .47MFD or .50MFD on my 64 car? My conclusion is that the .47MFD is used for the turn signal and the brake light - all others are .50MFD. Finally, am I correct that there is not a capacitor on the alternator? Thanks for the help.

          Re: Capacitor

I believe the coil capacitor is 0.3 mF. And there is a capacitor on the voltage regulator, but not on the alternator per se.

I have not had a 1964 alternator apart, but I expect it is similar to my 1980. My 1980 alternator DOES have an internal capacitor (used for suppression of radio noise). Capacitor (aka condenser) looks similar to what you would find in a points distributor.

Thank you Gary. My mechanic friend is putting electronic guts in the distributor; thus, he said there will not be a coil. And, I agree on the alternator - somewhere I read that there is an internal capacitor in an alternator. I found a turn signal capacitor on eBay - now just need to track down on for the brake lights. And the journey continues - been on this trek for nearly 10 years since retirement began......

As a side note - my very knowledgeable mechanic friend says that the capacitors are only needed for the AM band side of the radio. My radio is an AM-FM, but I still wanted to put in all of the capacitors as some would be a pain to install after the build is done.I am blessed to have a great mechanic friend (yes, I do pay him). He got an electronics education in late 60's, worked on aircraft electronics for a time, started out with the wrenches in a FORD garage, and eventually had his own business for upwards of 35 years. The knowledge about vehicles that he has in his head continues to amaze me. I am so blessed to have him on my side. Once I get everything put back together, he is going to check things over and fire up the engine. My 64 car is not a numbers car - it had a lot of that Grand Sport look alike stuff done on it prior to 1970 when my seller purchased it. I just want to get it back close and drive it. My restore is unlike many others - would have been better off $$ wise to buy one, but it is not all about the purchase for me - it is about the journey.
