    C1 oscillating temperature gauge problem

    My 60' has an issue where the fuel gauge is oscillating back and forth between empty and full rapidly. Any ideas and troubleshooting techniques? Just started and coincidently very hot down here in North Florida.

      The previous owner of the 62 I work on added an extra ground from the sending unit to the frame of this car.
      I can tell you that it DOES make a difference when I have to disconnect it and hide it for judging.
      Apparently from my discussion with the previous owner - who had the car for decades - this is not an unusual issue.

              Agree with Patrick, most fuel gauge problems are related to a bad ground

                  C1 oscillating temperature gauge

                  Hi all.

                  Yesterday I inadvertently posted a question regarding an oscillating fuel gauge. My mistake. What is happening is my TEMPERATURE gauge is rapidly banging back and forth between the extremes when I start the car. This is occurring from startup and doesn't depend on the temperature.

                  Now I am looking for wiring errors etc. Can a faulty temp sensor give such an issue? Thanks again for the feedback.

                      Some discussion on link below. You might check resistance of sending unit at various engine temperatures (cold/warming up /running - do you have access to IR meter?). Might help sorting out if you have a sending unit problem or a problem with wiring or gauge.

                      Second graph is one appropriate for you.

                          Thanks Dave. Went through the wiring again and found that 1 single strand of gauge wire had punched through the insulation and was creating a short against the block. Think that fixed it. Created a wildly oscillating gauge. Good to have that chart and info though.
