65 Rag Joint Orientation- Standard Column

Guys,
I have been through what has been posted about the above and reconciled against the AIM and Judging guide. Some of the posts are confusing. The AIM seems to represent my picture but wanted your comments. I am going to judge the car so want it right. Really regardless of judging want it right. Does this installation look correct?

Lawrence,

It’s installed backwards. Doesn’t the ‘65 JG say the upper flange is riveted to the rag? The ‘66 JG does, so I assume ‘65 is the same.

Also, I’m sure you know that the lower flange has to be positioned to that the pinch bolt inserts thru the indentation in the steering box shaft. The lower flange of the rag joint will not be positioned directly abutting the big nut on the steering box like you show.

Agree with Gary. Picture of my '67 below but the orientation for your '66 should be the same. Also, I noticed you have a cotter pin in the swivel for the clutch rod. When you install the cutch rod swivel to the clutch cross shaft, you will want to use a "G" clip (pictured in the lower right).

Guys, this is where I ended up today, after review of the JG and notes in the AIM. Please let me know if you see something off.

Gary, I am the one confused. I posted the wrong picture. Did it as I was going to sleep. Will post the current configuration when I get back to the shop.

just my 2 cents if the steering box is painted black which it looks like in the picture shouldn't part of the rag joint be painted also, where an unpainted box uses an unpainted rag joint

I agree Bob, and thought about that. I will use a sponge brush and dab it black.

Lawrence.

One more thing to keep in mind when installing the lower half on the steering box is that the slit lines with the center (high spot) mark on the steering box worm gear.

I did not get to the shop today. Knee deep in rebuilding a quadrajet 😳. Will get by tomorrow and get an updated picture. Thanks for all the help guys!
