I have on hand an Accel dual point tach-drive distributor that I might need to use in my 360 hp (1962 FI) engine while the Injector is being serviced and I run a carb set-up for a while. Is the gear on its main shaft compatible with the camshaft? I seem to recall that some aftermarket distributors have too hard of a gear that will wear out and eventually destroy the gear on the end of the cam. Am I right or just being paranoid?

That's a new one on me. The typical issue is that the blanks used for roller cams have gears which will chew up a distributor gear, not the other way around. If your engine has the flat tappet 097 cam, there is almost no chance there will be an issue if you stab in that Accel distributor.- Top

Thank you both. will just leave things alone.- Top

You do not need to use any special distributor gear with any 1955-82 stock camshaft. Melonized distributor gears are required for use with GM and other roller cams.
Also, I do not recommend the use of a bronze distributor gear. While they are compatible with both roller and non-roller camshafts, they are generally relatively short-lived and intended for racing applications that see limited miles and frequent tear-downs.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks for that note. I suspect that minute bronze particles are constantly being shed--a sacrificial sort of wear. Since it's not needed, I'll forget all about.- Top
