    Capacitors 1917580 & 1852715

On the voltage regulator of my '62 there's a capacitor (1917580 DR .5MF) with its one wire attached to the BAT terminal, it's clamped and it attaches to one of the cover screws. What does it do? Is it necessary?
My car also has another capacitor (1852715 DR .3MF) which attaches to the coil. What does it do? Is it necessary?

Those capacitors suppress electrical noise which would interfere with AM broadcasts on your '62's radio. If you listen to your AM radio and/or if you have your car judged, then yes, they are necessary.

Thanks Jim, I suspected as much but it's good to have it confirmed.
