    C3 brake calipers

I had to replace my original brake calipers ( well 3 of them were still the original one, the other one a GM replacement). I did replace them using new ones that are GM casting with SS sleeving. My question from a judging standpoint is should I save these and have then rebuilt or return to Mid-America for a core charge refund?

    Thanks,
    Phil # 46519

I think I would probably keep them. However, what is the year of the C3 and what is the casting number prefix of the caliper halves (i.e. "546", "545", or "547")?

That's the correct series for use on a 1982. Many of these '547' castings do have meaningful dates on them. However, I do not believe that dates, casting numbers or other nuances of configuration are currently judged.

Re: C2 rebuild issues ... and judging ???

i recently took my two front calipers off as one has developed a leak took them all appart cleaned and bead blasted them i noticed they have been sleeved allready ... so i took them to a rebuilder he says they cant be done again ?? strikes me as odd but they are the right castings for my 65 and i want to keep them for future judging ... any one got a sugestion as to where to get them rebuilt again or do i chuck em as my rebuilder says .... thanks Don...

First of all, your rebuilder is, essentially, correct. Previously sleeved calipers cannot be re-sleeved; that's exactly why most rebuilders won't give core credit for previously sleeved units. It's technically possible to re-sleeve them, but the product liability insurance carried by most brake system rebuilders will not allow it.

Notwithstanding the above, if a caliper is properly re-sleeved, it should never be necessary to re-sleeve it. The stainless steel sleeves will not corrode or wear. However, the pistons and seals will definitely wear and require replacement periodically. So, one simple replaces the pistons, seals, and boots and you're back to as-new.

Now, I certainly hope that your beed blasting of the calipers did not include the stainless steel piston bores. If it did, you've likely ruined them and you'll need to get new calipers.
