64 Passenger door adjustment help needed

    Hi all,

I have been trying unsucessfully to adjust the door fit on my 64 conv with no real sucess as of yet. What we have done so far is move the striker up and down, in and out and still get a bit resistance so as it will not close as smoothly as a Mercedes door. My drivers side closes with little to no effort. We are going to start removing the weatherstripping one section at a time to see if this helps. I'm thinking possibly the hinges may be out of adjustment as to not allow an easy closing. One point of interest is the upper vent window does strike the weather stripping trim about half way up before door is fully closed and does resist a bit when closing. Unfortunately the drivers side does the same thing but closes as described earler. Smoothly. Any help here is greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Craig Willetts

Why not remove the striker and see what you have before going farther into demolition mode?

        Craig -

Doors are fitted with the striker removed. The fit is set by adjusting at the hinge-to-door attachment (fore-aft and up-down by slip at the interface, in-out at the front with shims in the interface); once the gaps around the door and the flush at the front to the fender are satisfactory, the striker is re-installed and set to flush the rear of the door to the quarter panel and to provide easy closing. The striker should NOT impart any upward or downward force to the door during closing - all it does is set the flush at the rear and latch the door closed.

Craig, I would also suggest that you check and/or replace the brass bushings in the hinges. There are two per hole (one on the top and one on the bottom)that the hinge pins goes thru.

I agree with checking the bushings on the door before you start moving things around. If the bushings are worn you should be able to lift the door up and down.
Remember the drivers door gets much more use then the passenger door.

This is the passenger door we are talking about. I did remove the striker and took an overlook at the closer of the door. She doesn't close fully but I am assuming this is due to the weatherstripping in place. I guess my next point of contact will be the door hinges. Who knows from that point. Thanks for all the valuable inputs.
