The original carburator on my '62, 300hp, need to be rebuilt. Can anyone recommend a good reliable source? Also, has anyone discovered a good aftermarket replacement carburator that will accept the original air cleaner for a '62 300hp?

Re: '62 Carburator
I have an Edelbrok Performer Seires 600cfm with electric choke (it might be part # 1407???) that works well on my 61. The air cleaner base is a Pontiac GTO repop from some GTO vendor to fit the larger diameter carb and a stock (repop) funned top.- Top

Re: '62 Carburator
Jim Kennedy's suggestion is best.
I've run the Edelbrock Performer (the 14xx something or other - the one made for Chevies) on my car. Works great. But, as you found out, the air cleaner base won't fit. Finding an air cleaner or an adapter that fits gives you the wrong air cleaner and usually makes it too tall to fit under the hood. Not much space there.
The gas line won't fit either. Most people solve that problem with a barbed fitting on the car inlet and a piece of rubber gas line. If you do that, please let me know so that I can avoid parking near you.
Way I solved this problem was to swap the top (the air horn) off my orginal AFB, and mate it to the bottom (the body) of the Edelbrock carb. The Edelbrock Performer and your original AFB are mostly the same carburetor. Now the original air cleaner and gas lines bolt right up. But I think Jim Jennedy's got a better idea in his answer to you.- Top

Re: '62 Carburator
Hi John
Bob Kunz did mine for my 62 250 hp. He rebuilt it and replated it with the correct finishes. When I sent it to him, he called me back saying I had a wrong top plate on my carb.Someone before me replaced the top plate for what ever reason. He had the correct one.He installed the correct top and returned my wrong top.The carb looks and performs excellent.
Good luck....John- Top
