How early in 68 were AZ wheels made?

Anyone know how early in 1968 that AZ code rally wheels would have been made for the 1969 model year cars?

If a set is dated with year 8 and month 6, is it possible they are June 68 produced wheels or would these be June 78 wheels? Would there be any way to distinguish between the two decades?

Brad--I can only give a tangential answer to your question--I recently looked at a 68 vinyl hardtop (from car #891 as I recall) that has a June 1967 date in the window. So, that kind of lead time is possible, at least with other components.

        Agree...

As you thumb through an AIM book, take a look at the release dates on various drawings. You'll see, they're typically in the April-June timeframe of the PRIOR model year meaning designers were actively releasing Model Year 'next' parts while model year 'current' was still up and running.

In order to get an external supplier tooled and his part inspected/accepted, you need sufficient lead time for there to be production parts on-hand, in inventory to support model year change over at the final assy plant. Plus, it's not uncommon for us to see cars built VERY late in a given MY wearing MY+1 parts that were considered functional substitutes (if a given part has been depleted at the end of a production year, why order more of something that's about to be 'obsolete' when the replacements are on-hand + in inventory?).

            Jack--
We're certainly on the same page. My 30k mile 71 which is 148 from the end of production has a tranny with the right serial number (never been out of the car) but the assembly code has a 2 rather than a 1 in it (Muncie guessed that it would go into a 72, but St. Louis put it into a late 71 instead.)

Rally wheel information may be of some help:

                        Doug,
Is this telling me that the first date AZ wheels were made was 9/19/68, and then 10/21/68 was next date?

Any idea what publication that page comes from? Whatever it is seems like it could have lots of great info

After looking at this again, I think it is saying that car with vin 06001 had wheels produced on 9/19/68, this must be produced from some sample population of vehicles. I thought initially, it was some kind of listing of the production run dates for the wheels.
