Starting to put it back together after 25+ years of sitting. Two years ago I brought it home and stripped it down to a bare frame. Starting to look like a car again...

Thanks Roy! It is still just a driver, but it will be a nice one. Every nut and bolt has been removed, cleaned or replaced. I'm starting on the wiring and have sent out a few pieces of chrome to see how the local plating company does. Gauges will be sent out soon and then I just have a few things to get to finish it up.95% of the work was done in my garage, including bodywork and paint.Maybe I'll park next to you at Hot August Nights this year!

It's refreshing to see one of these cars that is still original looking. The rear of the car has the later tail pods and the round holes foro the desicant box. Looks like a nice car to restore. Great photos and great work on a true, real, car.

Certainly looks good. You have one advantage over me, you knew the engine was supposed to be red. I had to go back and fix that years later, with the car fully assembled

One point, and others will probably disagree. My '55 #518, came from the factory with the 4" round "off road" style mufflers normally associated with the '56. This from an unimpeachable eyewitness, my Dad.

It was later confirmed by Ken Keyser in his series "Countdown to Gold", in the 55-57 exhaust edition. According to GM specifications, 55, 56, and 57 were supposed to have these mufflers, in fact the part number of the muffler alone (not available to dealers other than as a muffler and pipe assembly) remained unchanged for quite a while. Naturally, some cars may have been assembled with oval mufflers, since they must have had quite a few lying around after 54.

I switched from ovals to round in 1985, and they sound great! They are not offensive, they only really get loud when you stomp on it, and have a nice "song" when cruising on the highway. The ovals really muted it down, sounded like a family car.
