    Terry,
GM dealers in Canada will do the R-134 conversion. No problem. They will not touch R-12 by law.

I suspect you can get the job done at a small shop much cheaper than a GM dealer.

Ask your local chapter members, go to a local cruise night and talk to people with muscle cars, street rods, etc. Try to get a consensus on a shop that does good work for a reasonable price.

            Verle,
I have a number of things to do when the car arrives. Mostly trivial but I am anal on detail. And this car needs some interior trim items. Yes, a local shop is an option. Geesh, I've done a 1979, a 1967, and here we go again! As people say, there is no end to this madness.

That article is more or less correct- it's difficult or impossible to get R12 as a do it yourselfer in Canada. Nothing stops you from going to Canadian Tire to have them do it professionally however.

I had my old Infiniti (RIP) topped up at the corner garage before passing it on the next victim, ummm, owner.

I don't think you will be able to have R-12 legally replenished in Canada.
Try this site; I've used their products and they work!

You don't have to convert, & you don't have to use 12 as expensive as it is. Go with the synthetic R12 replacement. It works fine. freeze 12 is one, autofrost is a company that makes it. You use about a 20% less charge than the 12, & it works well with the frigidaire system. By the way, it is a very common problem that the front compressor seal seeps allowing the charge to deplete over a few months. It was common for GM to need up to a pound of freon in season. Most of the compressor seals leak over time, & you can spend $$$ to get it fixed, only to have it leak again. Also common with age are dried out o-rings. the only way to tell for sure is to hook up the gauges & take some pressure readings, then do a leak test if the loss is significant. You can look for caked up oil & road dirt around the fittings. That's usually a tell tale but not always the cause.
As a former dealer employee, stick to a resto shop in the area, go with a reccomendation. GM dealers are not equipped for R12 or retrofitting, & if one should take on the project it would be quite expensive.

Thank to All for the comments. Very much appreciated. Sounds as if this could get expensive but I'll check with Club members as to a shop that has both expertise and reasonable rates.
