Re: 71 factory primer car
Edit2: Our boys nailed it in complete detail..."Any color coat on a car delievered in primer is cause for full deduction for wrong color. For 1970 to 1972 two coats of primer, the first red and the second gray, are applied to all jobs". Technically, I would call the second coat a sealer coat. I don't know how the factory delivered the "primer" cars, but technically, it looks like to me either color would work. By the way, what IS the color of this car anyway?
The inference is 1) the gray is considered to be primer 2) a car in still in red oxide is not yet finished.
Hey, are we being a*al retentive or what?- Top

Re: 71 factory primer car
Here's a fair to poor photo of the original red (as little as there was) coming off my 71. I think you can see the 2 colors of the primer and sealer. Next time, I'll remember to push the body outside before I take the photo for more light and contrast. Oh, that's right, the next time is going to be in my next life!

Alan
PS: First I had the picture too large and couldn't load it, now it's too small. I'm way dumber than I need to be, I've been playing with this since 3:00.Attached Files71 Coupe, 350/270, 4 speed

Re: 71 factory primer car
I had seen photos of the car with original owner at delivery. It was painted in red oxide primer. It did not have the light gray primer sprayed. The gray was used to be sanded before the final top coat of color.
That car has the window sticker to prove the delivery in primer. The question is what info stamped on the trim tag? What is SPEC or PRIME ?
The car to be NCRS judged in red oxide primer. If you had painted the car any other color would be a deduction.

Sounds like there's either two ways that the car could have been delivered, or the manuals are wrong.- Top

Re: 71 factory primer car
I saw a 1965 or 1966 big block no paint code car judged for bloomington gold in 1994 or 1995 and that car was painted in a red oxide primer. It was very unique to say the least and there was always a crowd around it looking at the trim tag.- Top
