Help with 66 pad judging

The photos below are of the pad (taken without and with flash) on my '66 L79 coupe. I am the 5th owner of the car and I've spoken with all previous owners, so I know the history of the car back to day one. I have the original bill of sale, protecto-plate, owner notes, etc. The car is a no-hit car and the engine has never been apart. The car spent it first 20 years in Ohio and some of those years as a year-round commute car, hence the rusty pad. Am I destined to get a 38-point deduct for the condition of the pad and the lack of obvious broach marks? I suspect the rusty state of the pad is responsible for the lack of broach marks.

Many engines had very little trace of broach marks to start with- to assume that they all had cookie-cutter identical '****ounced' marks and deduct accordingly when they are not present is a fundamental error some judges make.

Aside from the traces of rust, I wouldn't worry about your pad.

That's a great looking pad, I would have it judged as is you can see signs of broach. With all your documentation I would think a judge would understand not wanting to change such a great piece of your cars history just to satisfy a judging manual. This condition is perfectly acceptable for Bow Tie judging.

I would leave he pad as is and see what a judge would have to say. Try to get a experienced judge to guide you regarding options.

Would it be worth my paying Al Grenning to assess it? Or is that just a waste of several hundred dollars?

I would give it full credit.

Gary, in my opinion that's an original pad...an inspection would be a waste of money.

If the judges are only looking for broach marks for originality (a myopic, simplistic position IMO), an inspection by Al isn't going to put any broach marks on it...they either know their business or they don't. Using the presence of longitudinal broach marks to determine pad originality is a crutch in my opinion. Get it judged; it may fare better than you expect. JMHO.

Gary, by far I am not an expert, but I believe that I would leave that pad alone. Nick has looked at many more mid-years that I ever will.

I can't even think of a slur, insult, profanity, obscentity, body part, or animal remotely similar to "p r o n". Well, there is "prawn"...a vicious verbal epithet.

I am by far no expert on stamp pads but here is a pic of my original pad on my 59. The engine has just been reassembled after cleaning. This car is also a no hit, non restored car that had been in storage since 1972. I feel comfortable with mine and yours looks about the same.

Hi Gary If I were judging mechanical on your car I would not have any question about the pad on your car. You might try rubbing some clean oil on the pad with your finger as that might help highlight the broach marks that are there but cannot be detectewd that well. Also look at it with a "Broach Buster" which works better for detection than rejection. JMHO. Regards JR
