    1967 Brake Console

My "original" black brake console that was on my 67 (327/300hp, auto with AC, PS, PB) was cracked from a heavy elbow lean (I'm guessing). I purchased three separate black consoles in a effort to replace the unit. I have two fairly nice units now, but they are very different in makeup and design.

    1. Is solid black throughout (ie: turn it over and the underside is black). It appears identical to the one that was in my car. One distinguishing feature that both have are visible "dimples" on the top where the posts are underneath.

    2. The second unit is black on the outside but a whitish-green color underneath with signs of black "overspray" all around the edges. More importantly, the top has not "dimpled apperance".

Here's the big question. Is one more correct of an original console that would have been installed at the time of production, while the other represents a later service replacement?? Does anyone else see these "dimples" on a console they know is original???? Let me know. Thanks.

    Kirk,

Your assumptions are right. Never notice the dimples but just checked my factory console and sure enough. And consensus is that original factory are made from black material and replacement of some era were sprayed.

I got a saddle tan brake console off a 67 parts car back in about 1970. The underside is whitish green and it does have the dimples. Never thought it wasn't original to the car. Were all the original consoles made of a solid black material?

How badly cracked was the original? I've repaired these consoles using both epoxy as well as fiberglass (cloth). Done on the inside the repair is virtually imperceptible externally. Plus, it's VERY strong; likely stronger than the original piece. You can paint the finished console with black interior paint and it will look just like new.

I don't think they were. I think that many originals were a lighter substrate plastic and painted to match the interior. I think this was true from 1967 through 1976.

All black ones in 67 were made from black, that was the question right? light colors sprayed over this greenish one. And maybe after 67 even the black ones sprayed from his example.

I kinda had the same plan when I took the original off. Unfortunately, many of the studs simply cracked and broke away as I worked to unscrew the mounts. Was bummed, but as I mentioned I found a perfect duplicate on Ebay which is solid with no cracks.

For now, I have the service replacement on the car because it didn't show the dimples and was in almost perfect NOS condition. Guess I have an extra original to replace that should I ever make the same mistake as a previous owner and lean a bit too heavy on the console. Thanks for the suggestion though - although if you have a way to fix the broken posts as well, it might be possible to resurrect the original too.

I've never had to repair broken posts. However, I strongly suspect that the epoxy will do the trick. The main problem would be in getting them aligned properly. However, I think that with a little care and ingenuity it could be done. Epoxies are very strong.
