instructions for side pipe installation on 69

    Hello friends,
Does anyone know where I can find information or anything in print for changing over a non-side exhaust 69 to a side exhaust car the right way that might even pass judging, or is this unlikely ? Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Danny

Danny, it will be very hard, and even more expensive, to convert a standard exhaust to side pipe and be undetectable. The rear quarter panels and the rear valance panel will have to be changed. There should be no evidence that the holes in the frame where the muffler hangars have had bolts in them. My SWAG to do this conversion, buying all the parts including the pipes and covers would run well North of $5,000.00.

      Hi Danny,
You would probably find the best instructions in the Assembly Instruction Manual. I said I wouldn't do this, but this is a public board and I must be truthful. With the level of NCRS judges at today's meets, it's highly unlikely that an original under-the-car exhaust system car could be changed to a side exhaust car without detection.

Thanks for the information. I am planning on having the car judged, and the original owner bought oe sidepipes in 1970 & actually put them on the car, because when he ordered the car ( July of 68 ), sidepipes were not available. The sidepipes and covers are in excellent condition and are original pieces, where I don't have the original undercar exhaust. I love sidepipes, but I also want to get Top Flight. I have loads of documentation with the car. What is your advice ?
        Thanks, Danny

Purchase the highest quality undercar exhaust system you can and replace the side pipes. The reproduction rocker panel moldings are close but lack the tabs the originals had. A minor point hit. It would be nice if you found an original set of exhaust tips for the car. Makes a nice addition.

If you leave the side exhaust on, you take a chance of losing all the points on the exhaust and rocker moldings. A partial deduct on the fiberglass in the rear will also be taken.

            Hey Danny,

You might consider an "off-road" exhaust system from Allens in aluminized steel. It sounded great on a friend's '65 365HP car, gave that powerful sound without drowning out the driver. Allens aluminized system would probably receive the most credit except for an original (NOS) system. There may be other opinions about whose exhaust system would receive the most credit.

I'm surprised Joe Lucia hasn't recorded his thoughts about side exhaust as compared to other systems.

Recently I worked in a 69' and helped install the side exhaust (repro). The car was a normal exhaust car which the owner wanted "side piped". The side exhaust is bolted to the frame using an existing hole, but the back cover bracket needs a hole in the frame which is absent in it.

The side exhaust cover uses existing rocker molding bushings, but it is necessary to trim the front of the rocker molding area per the AIM to clear the exhaust tube, something I didn't like but it was his car...

Just my little experience with side pipes...
