55 shielding is done and over

Now I can say I had a dozen complete 55 shielding for sale on e-bay and sold them all. That is the last ones I'll ever repro again because there a pain in the (you know what) just interesting how many people are restoring 55's .
Now may be I'll start seeing a few ( not just one )at NCRS meets. Because I don't think I'll ever see them on the road >

Roy-- First the bubble tops and then the shielding. Who is going to supply parts for the future rebuilders? I also agree with you about this board. I am having trouble getting around it. It appears to me that there should be a set of instructions instead of assurances that things will get better.

I cannot navigate around and cannot see who is answering.

Oh well-- Maybe I don't need this membership. We can alaways email each other direct. Nice picture of the shielding.

What I liked about the old forum was that you could see who responded UNDER a POST by NAMEs,, Now I have to open each post to see a persons name and scroll thought it to see who responded . I find myself posting little any more, but the rest is OK when you understand it. But this board like the old one 98% is C2 High $$ leaving us POOR C1's guys the minority like in the CF forum.
There is no C1 forum any where ,and soon nothing for C1's

Roy, C1 or C2 I still enjoy your posts. How did you make that shielding? Thats pretty amazing. And I thought you were just another pretty face. Get someone to help you change your setting (I`m not smart enough to) My settings have all the responses listed under original posts. You can scan thru them just like the old board. I kept changing mine until I got it that way but don`t exactly know what I did. Good Luck!

Is that Hallet label supposed to be a reproduction of a label originally used? The reason I ask is it has a ZIP code on it, and I don't they had ZIP codes in 1955.

Joe !Years ago when I first repro'ed the shielding Burt who was the big banana then, said "that" to people I sold them to. And they tore the sticker off! I told people then it was the PHONE number NOT a zip code of the company. That's what it is. NOW people realize it was , remember in the 50's phone numbers were 4 or 5 digits.
I have the prints!! , then later people sent letters to me asking for the sticker, ether way people can make up their own minds or listen to judges, don't matter to me any more!people can leave the original repro of the sticker or take it off.

ZIP codes were instituted in 1963. Prior to that, postal zones were used for some larger cities (you may recall addresses like "Los Angeles 5, California").

As far as phone numbers, I don't recall when the area codes were added. However, I believe the 7 character format for the basic phone number existed in 1955, at least for larger metropolitan areas. For many years the format was 2 alpha characters followed by 5 digits and the 2 alpha characters represented the first two letters of some word. For example, a phone number might be "greenleaf" 1-3240. That would be dialed as GR1-3240. Later (in the early 60's, as I recall), the alpha characters were converted to their equivalent digits on the dial (i.e. "GR" became "47").

Area code for Inglewood back then was 213.

Here in the L.A. area it was pretty common to see prefixes spelled out with the first two letters of the city. For example, Whittier, CA was "WH" or 94.

BTW, I was born at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, CA in...1955.

OK no zip codes before 63 , I have phone numbers of company's 's in the 50's having 5 numbers and 7 numbers around the USA selling bikes back then .
Any way the sticker was copyed from the original prints
and what does it now matter any way.

5 digit phone numbers may have been in use in some rural areas in 1955; I don't know, for sure. However, I feel pretty confident that in major metropolitan areas (like Los Angeles), the 7 digit numbers were in use.

What does it matter? I don't know----just a point of "historical interest", I suppose.

Gee Roy, If you "have the prints", why don't you post them? The fact of the matter is, when Bert Lukens walked up to me several years ago at the Puyallup swap meet, he was quite excited - showing me your repro shielding. It looked quite nice to me, though I have very little knowledge of 55's. Then, I said to Bert, "What the heck is this perfect repro doing with a ZIP code on it - on a part made in 1955?" So, if you want, give Bert the credit for questioning the ZIP code... And, I tried calling that telephone number - guess what - no answer...
