By stropping the edge in ONE direction only, you roll over a tiny "lip" onto the opposite side. That lip is what does the scraping/planing.
Kevin recommends at least 1500 grit for this edge prep. That's what I use (and a fresh blade of course!)
Just lubricate the surface, keep your pressure very light. Don't forget to first bend the blade into a slight arc to prevent gouging by the corners.
Try it -- you'll like it. As I said earlier, this is a lifesaver for removing runs in the topcoat. Much better than nib files in my experience (which invloves more than a few runs...).
