I'm re-doing some of my wire connectors on my 71 small block. Should I use a conductive lube? If so, what kind and what is the primary purpose of using such a product?
There are various manufacturers of Dialectric Grease (I like Permatex the best) that I use on every electrical connection there is. First off, if you ever have to pull the connection apart again (ie. pulling plug wires off of plugs) it makes the job a lot easier-it keeps the boots from corroding and freezing onto the plugs. It keeps water/moisture out of the connection and keeps spark plug boots & other insulating materials pliable and less condusive to drying out. Get a big tube of it, and put a dab on the tip of your spark plugs and in the conductors in your distributor cap. Mandatory stuff for your toolbox.
I believe you are looking for conductive lube. Dielectric grease as mentioned by the previous poster iis the opposite; it provides insulating properties yet prevents items such as spark plug boots from siezing to the plugs.
As far as a conductive grease, I use a copper-colored product. It stains everything it touches but workes extremely well, especially on plug connections or other items that may someday need to be removed. Sorry but I don't recall the name as I long ago decanted it into a smaller container. But you'll know it when you find it by the copper color (it has bits of copper embedded in the grease).
