    Starter question...I think i made a mistake

Got a idea to put a high torque starter in my 75 because when it gets hot its hard to turn over.Probably due to the amount of advance. Anyway...i put the new one in and did a dumb thing.I forgot to tighten the nut on the battery terminal on the starter and tried to turn it over..of course it did nothing but a little spark(only guessing on that since i couldn't see it)I then realized that i didn't tighten the nut on the terminal..After tightening it all up I get nothing..Is it possible that i fried the starter? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

    Not likely. Check your battery.

      Blown fusible link perhaps?

You'd know immediately if the problem was a blown fusible link.... There'd be NO power in the cockpit at all (interior lights, instruments, radio, Etc.)!

Can't be a fusible link. There is none in either the battery cable or the solenoid trigger (crank) wire. Any links would be in the line(s) that supply power further down the line.

A loose connection will draw more current (and thereby create heat) if it cranked, but you said that it did nothing. I don't think that your loose connection would have caused any damage under these circumstances.

            A few things to check:
            - +12vdc on the main starter terminal
            - +12vdc on the start side of the solenoid while key is in the crank position.
            - Make sure the crank wire is on the "S" terminal, not the "R"

If all of that checks out, I'd bolt the old starter in and see what happens. Maybe you got a bad one.

Here's a related topic regarding those starter solenoids getting hot and not turning over the starter motor. I have the same problem with my LS-5 even though I have the heat shield. I discussed this with people who operate a starter/generator/alternator restoration service who suggested that the spring in the solenoid may be too long to make contact after heating up and they suggested I remove the longer spring and install a short spring which would more likely create consistent starting. Any thoughts on this?

              Thanks,
              Scott

Thanks guys for the input...Took the starter to my area auto zone and had it tested..Turns out its bad..Drive barely pops out and no spin at all..Sending it back for a replacement.
