    [VIDEO] Barrett-Jackson: 1964 Coupe and 1965 Convertible

Hi all. My name is Keith Cornett and although I've been a member for about 6-7 years now, this is my first post on the technical discussion board.

I have several Corvette websites many of you might be familiar with: www.CorvetteBlogger.com are my most visited.

I posted two videos from last night's Barrett-Jackson auction on my Corvette blog. The videos were the auctions of the 1964 Riverside Red Corvette Coupe and the 1965 Nassau Blue Corvette Roadster. They can be viewed here:

Instead of listing Corvettes that are for sale like I usually like to do on Fridays, I thought I would show you two Corvettes that sold last night at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Palm Beach, Florida. We always hear about the big blocks and the rare or special edition Corvettes at Barrett-Jackson, but […]

I'll be posting more videos from the auction as the weekend progresses.

Re: [VIDEO] Barrett-Jackson: 1964 Coupe (long.........)

Hi Keith.....Welcome!! You've come to the right place......

So I was there at BJ Thursday. I spent about 30 minutes with the 64 Coupe. I was considering jumping in on the bidding as the prices were remarkably low early in the day. That's why I like going day one. I live about 90 mins away from WPB.

Here's my report on the red 64 coupe. link to BJ listing here: http://tinyurl.com/39fesq
The car was described as "original, except paint". So I dove in. Put my NCRS cap on and started looking closely. The owner was not present so I spent quite a bit of time around and under the car. Gorgeous paint, but little bits over oversparay in the typical hard to mask areas. Not bad though. Nice chrome and trims. Front grille area a bit hoakey. Got under the car. Nice frame, but lots of fresh black spray paint touch up and fresh undercoating. No noticeable rust at the frame rear wheel arches. Left rear muffler missing the outer trim, wrong outlets, and broken hanger bracket. Rattled it around, but easily fixable.

Then the owner and his wife appeared. He explained he bought it for her, but she wanted a 5x T-Bird. Bought her a 5x T-bird but she didn't like that. So he bought her a late model T-Bird, thus now selling the 64. I then went at it. He opened everything up for me to see. Interior very nice. Factoy AC and PW, PB, PS. He said he had entire dash cluster and clock restored. Mileage was reset to zero! I asked actual mileage. He said he didn't know. It came from Louisiana where he said no title is required >10 years old and bought from a dealer there. He was very accomodating and even let me use his little pocket flashlight. Nice guy.

I then checked numbers. Trim tag & vin plate appeared original.
Trim Tag showed 940AA........ which is Satin Silver. We have a Resale Red Repaint, which appeared to work! Trim STD, black interior.
Vin# mid 1600's. Early car, September 63 build. Went to the engine area. Everything was sprayed blackout. I mean everything. Booster, pipes, brakelines, etc. I recall the narration on TV mentioned that.

Engine was described as a 327/300. I could not see the block cast # as the PG kickdown bracket covers it. I did not go to the cast date area. Most items seemed correct. Went to the engine pad. Hard to see but the vin matched, but was very faint. Script was very small, did not appear correct to me. Just barely made out the last digits. Assy stamp...arghh! It was not ganged. Some high, some low, some light, oversized characters, overwritten on each other. F09IISD. Sept 11 327/300 Auto. I asked owner if he bought the car as "matching #'s(oh I hate that phrase). He said no. It is entirely possible this was the original cyl case, but was a horribly done restamp. Unfortunate.

Then the BJ driver came to take it away. Started right up. Put the windows down and drove it to the staging area. Owner told me what he paid for the car 6 months ago, plus what he put into it. He expressed he felt he was going to loose money on the sale. End result appears to me that he did loose money. Commission was over $9k on the sale. 8% plus 10%.

Later on went back inside and contemplated getting in on the bidding but when it reached 40k I said forgetaboudit.

Thanks for the video. Being there made it special......Rich

I missed that one, thanks for posting! $54k for that ride is astounding! My car's selling at B-J, beats the heck out of eBay!

          Rich:

Thanks for your perspective on this Corvette. The commentators said several times they weren't sure if the Red was the original color but we never heard what was.

It's also interesting regarding your take on the engine stamp. Those are the kind of details you only get by being there.
