    Anodizing

How do NCRS Judges look upon anodizing headlight and wiper actcuators.

    Mine are original and faded.

As far as I know, if they look as originally finished, they judge just fine. The actuators were not anodized, though. They were zinc plated with a chromate bright dip.

As Joe notes, anodizing isn't real.
Download the judging sheets, and see how many condition points are awarded to the actuators. Then guesstimate how many points you'll lose vs. how many $ to replate.

Thank you Patrick, I want to know what to do and what not to do. Of course, the cost is always a consideration. I do not know if I can have my car judged this year but I need to move toward that day and not waste resources on junk parts or the unneeded.

The NCRS membership fee is a real bargain! I am looking forward to getting together with my local guys soon as the shows start.

Pat, I don't think the deduction for having an actuator anodized vs. plated & dichromated should come from the part's Condition points box. It's a Finish issue here and Originality points should be allocated along the lines of Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration and Completeness.

So, I'd expect a 20% deduction on the part's Originality to the extent the actuators constitute the entire scoring line item at hand....

              Jack,

              How abouit re-reading the thread.
He wants to know how we look at anodizing, and Joe responds that they weren't anodized, they were dichromated.
He next states he wants them to look good, but "not at the expense of real."

My following point is that he may not need to do anything to them at all if the condition points he'd lose for his current, faded actuators are not worth the expense of reconditioning them.

I said nothing about anodizing with regard to judging points.

                Patrick, Jack, et al-----

I'm fairly sure one of the reasons that the original actuators were plated rather than anodized is because anodizing is a metal finishing process which is applicable primarily to aluminum. While it is also used for some other metals, it is not used for steel. The canisters of the w/w door and headlamp actuators were steel. Therefore, anodizing is not applicable to them, either then or now.

                  Joe,

I don't think that GM ever would have spent a dime anodizing them even if they were aluminum. I can't see that kind of expense for a moderately hidden object.
