    Carburetor tags

This is a general question. (No year or model.)

In the past, I've seen carburetors with aluminum tags screwed to the top area. I understand they have the ID number stamped into them.
My question is: I've seen different colored tags, (Red, blue, gold, etc..)
and different shapes. Why is this? I also seen that some of these tags have holes pushed into them. These hole are different shaped sometimes also.

Is there a website or a book that breaks this information down and explanes the colors and shapes?
    Thanks Ken

    Re: Carburetor tags

As far as I know, all C1 carb tags are either natural brass or aluminum, depending on the year and carb type.
Often carb rebuild shops will add a colored aluminum tag showing their brand, sounds like that is what you are referring to?

Carb brass tags had a punched out inspector mark of different designs for each inspector and shift! 54 having three Carbs would all have the same design cut out .Repro tags have no cut out , some times you see three indifferent cut outs on a 54 because the owner dint find the same matching tags

C1 carburetor tags indicate the model, which is emobssed on the tag. They will also have a date code (letter and digit) in a smaller font, a production line number in an even smaller font (normally 4 or 8 on a WCFB), and an inspection punch (a hole with a shape specific to an individual inspector). You will find that original tags have the edges rolled under which was an attempt to strengthen the edge and prevent it from tearing. Most reproductions do not contain this feature; just a raw edge at the edge of the emboss surrounding the tag.
