    Factory or Something Else?

I have a Tri-Power manifold for a 67 435hp car. From the top it looks great, however there has been some kind of repair on the bottom. I have had it looked at , and told it was a factory repair.

I don't know if this was common or if it was done aftermarket. I don't know how to post pictures here which would make it much easier to understand.

    Ken -

Just shoot it at 640x480, transfer the image to your computer, and use the "Manage Attachments" button under "Additional Options" below the window you compose your post in; browse to your image, upload it, and when you post, your photo will show up as a thumbnail which will enlarge to full size when folks click on it.

It's hard for me to tell from the photo but that does not look like any weld repair in aluminum that I have ever seen. It looks more like a casting defect (cold shunt) or possibly an artifact of the mold. I cannot detect any weld beads or see any heat effected zones. Can you get any photos of the transition area up close?

Dave, let me say first that the scratch marks were made by someone looking at it to determine how it was done. I have one more picture of the area, below and I will take some real close ones later.

That was done at the foundry. It would be interesting to see another intake for comparison.

As stated I have shown it to several people and no one could fathom a local shop having the expertise to do this type of repair. Still it looks like something occured to the manifold.

You asked my question for me in that has anyone ever seen another like this? I have seen a lot of Tri Power cars but who would know unless it was disassembled???

              Thanks for your input.

From my metal casting class many, many, many moons ago, it looks like the mold was temporarily damaged either before this piece was poured or during this piece's removal. When this piece was removed and inspected, a pour of aluminum and hand working to form it was done to finish this piece and wasted not. The 'patch' was done while the manifold was still hot enough to accept the patch becomming one, just not the 'patch' edges which cooled more quickly. There might very well have been only one casting like this. JMTCW

Can you see any indications of issues inside the runner? It might have just been a void that was corrected when the item was inspected after removal from the mold?

Great, I have a one of a kind abberation. Anyhow, all the runners look normal, the blem is only apparent from the bottom. I don't plan on using it on my car, which is mostly original, a few after market things that I have changed over the years, not knowing better.

I am learning now, a little too late perhaps, but getting out all of the old stuff in boxes and putting it back on.
