    Judging question on batteries

I was wondering for a 71 which calls for a R-89S battery, what would the points deduction if one used a R-89W or Y89 battery.

Would the deduction be same as if a current Delco battery was used (which I understand to be 20 points)?

Or would the deduction be less for using an Delco battery which is from the correct era (though not correct part #)?

    Brad,

I will be interested in what more experienced judges think, but my opinion is that it would be viewed the same as a current Delco service replacement. Batteries have a standard deduction table and consequently you can only judge it on that basis.

R-89W would be an acceptable battery for any 1971 Corvette. The reasoning is that it is the proper battery for the T60 option. 1n 1971 there were 1,455 cars equiped with T60 and who is to say your car was not one of them. Benefit of the doubt always goes to the "car".

Be careful how you install it....I was gigged 3 pts because I was told it was installed backwards.

I think the judges were right that it is backwards.

The repro R89W earns full credit; whereas, the top material on the 89S is different from the original.

The point loss for a current Delco is not 20 points, more like 12 I believe, more if you are missing the caps and hoses.

Thanks. So if I chose to just use a current Delco, but wanted to get the points for caps and hoses, what do you recommend regarding placement of the caps since the current Delco battery would not have the holes for them?

Stuff the caps and hoses in the battery compartment some place where the judge can see them.

                  One caveat:
Be sure you have the same physical SIZE Delco battery as original. I lost almost all my points because the Delco in place - the only one I could find at the time - was too small in the judges' opinion.

And yes, I had caps and hoses in place.

                    Thanks.
I am still hoping to get an actual R-89S (without going with the repro with a battery inside a repro case) I have an original R-89S case, but need a good top.
I guess it is good that points are provided for the caps and hoses if you use a current Delco and just have them laying loose.

Yes, now only installation is missing, usually one point.
