    62 Powerglide Question

How much pressure is there in the cooling lines coming out of the Powerglide transmission? I bought a 62 driver and it has a aftermarket trans cooler with clamped lines and I wonder if the setup is safe from a leaking standpoint.

    Re: 62 Powerglide Question

I don"t know the exact pressure, but I've had one on my 62 for 35 years and it has never leaked, there are steel lines from the transmission to the front & a flexable cooler mounted in front of the radiator, there are two pieces of approx 6" rubber hose with 4 mini clamps to make the connection. I have changed the rubber hoses 5-6 times over the years just to be safe.
    Hope this helps you out.

Max pressure in a factory PG is rarely over 110 psi, so on a straight pass-thru cooler you should be safe.

William I replaced one the rubber hose connections from my 70 turbo 400 connected to the radiator about 10 years ago. I used new regular rubber hose that you can buy for using as gas line. Wrong selection. Not much later the replaced hose bursted. No real damage done since it was detected right away with the smoke from transmission fluid on the exhaust while I was at a stoplight. Went to a hydraulic repair shop and bought some better rubber hose. This will never burst, it has a inner steel reinforcement and I had to use a hack saw to cut it to the appropiate length.

Stock a '62 didn't have a cooler. I know your question was about pressure but if it's got a cooler it might not be a '62 P.G.

I was under the impression that the 62 powerglide had the plugs for a cooler but it was not used by Chevrolet because of the light weight of the Corvette, also that the same case was used for the later Corvettes & bigger Chevrolet passenger cars which had transmission coolers.

both the cast iron powerglide and the aluminum case powerglides have the potential for ATF cooler lines. its just that the c-1 vettes powerglides were plugged at the cooler inlet and outlet areas.the c-2 powerglide equipped vettes did have coolers from the factory. mike

                is not

Option 313 Powerglide Transmission is a pretty rare animal in original condition, and near impossible to find if looking for one. Think twice, and again, before you lose something you now have by modifying it if in fact it is an original 1962 Corvette air-cooled Aluminum Case Powerglide.

I missed the part about "after market" cooler. My mistake. Mine has depressed head hex plugs marked with a "L".
