    hose clamp tool

A friend showed me a really neat tool used to remove or install GM hose clamps. It looks like a pair of plyers with a hole drilled in the center of the gripping teeth which prevent the clamp fromm slipping off the tool. He can't remember where he bought it. anyone know who sells these??

I assume you're talking about the pliers for corbin-style hose clamps. These used to be VERY common in mechanics' tool boxes. They were just a standard-type set of pliers with the grooves to retain the ends of the clamps. I haven't seen this type in years although they may still be available somewhere. The style that I know is available looks more like snap ring pliers. It's manufactured by Lisle or KD Tools (or, maybe both). I've seen these in Sears and other tool stores. They're not very expensive---about 20 bucks, as I recall.

I made my own with a set of the right size "American made" pair of pliers and a grinder. Less than $20.00 as well.

I just read this again; "a pair of pliers"? Sounds funny. Oh well, there is also a "pair of pants".

Walt, I got mine at NAPA. It's made by K-D tools. The business ends are adjustable to grip the clamps at different angles. Works great. About $22.

I bought mine about 5 years ago at Carlisle. Many vendors had them for sale.

K-D #429 - VERY handy tool, with adjustable ends on the jaws - makes Corbin clamps a piece of cake.

Thanks for all of the feedback. The local NAPA has the K-D 429 in stock. I'll get it tomarrow.

I may be mistaken but the tool you pictured is not for Corbin clamps but for small band clamps like the ones used on fuel lines. I have this tool and the spring clamp tool. If I am wrong I apologise.

Sears sells them. I've seen them at many tool vendors displaying at swap meets.

                      Walt,
Where ever you get them at, just make sure the heads 'swivel' makes for much easier removal/application in tight spots....
Some even come with a couple different swivel heads, for different size corbin clamps.....
                      Good Luck,
                      David

I have the same tool as John. Mine came from Sears. They were listed for the wire ring clamps. The ends swivel and also will lock compressed. Maybe they will work on others as well.

                          Jeff -

When I bought it years ago, it was labeled "Corbin Clamp Pliers", although it would probably work fine on band clamps too; in production, we used Apex duckbill pliers with the ends of the jaws heated and bent about 15* for the band clamps.

I bought mine yesterday at Sears. They call them Hose Clamp Plyers. Appear the same as K-D 429. they are Craftsman and Cost $ 9.99 with
a lifetime replacement warranty. Not Bad !!!

MAC Tools has a Corbin clamp tool which is like the ones pictured except it has a cable that goes to a set of remote jaws that are positioned on the clamp ends. Then you squeeze the pliers (which are connected to the jaws via the cable) and the clamp is free. A fantastic tool since positioning the pliers on the clamp which is sometimes difficult, is not necessary. I borrowed a set from my tool guy, expensive but excellent design.
