    1966 Radiator Core Support

Okay, I removed the radiator core support from my 1966 BB car to clean and repaint it. When I went to reinstall it, I found that the front nose had dropped enough that the 4-5 shims per side would not go back in. In past posts I see advice on how to avoid that (should have looked first) but nothing on how to fix it once you have screwed up. The support went back in perfectly but with no room for the existing shims. By the way, the hood closes properly. How can I fix this now that it has occured or do I need to worry about it since it lined up okay and the hood does not appear affected. Thanks as always...

i'd gently pry between the core support and the frame rails and insert at least half the original # of shims. then check hood to top surround gaps and hood closure at the latches. if all fits nicely, secure the core support to the frame and forget it. mike

You can also use wood shims like you'd use to shim a door in place, and help expand the gap so that you can reinsert the original shims.
