    1982 Oil Filter

A "newbie". Had my first judging experience last year at Bloomington Gold. Want to learn more about NCRS judging. I can't find the right oil filter for my '82. Blue? White? Short? Tall? Number is PF25. Thanks.

1982 used a an AC PF-25, for sure. The AC PF-25 was 4-5/16" in length.

AC PF-25's in that era were painted blue. However, I'm not sure if the filter installed on the assembly line at that time was blue or black. For a period of quite a few years in the 80's and early 90's, GM used special black painted oil filters on the assembly line. I'm not sure if this started as early as 1982, though.

    Later C3 guys should know.

          Arland,
Is that a "teal" color or is it blue.?? Photo looks teal. I've seen the teal before but never knew what it was from. We know from the mid 70's to somewhere in the 80's are dark blue.

            Dave,
I have some '82 filters that show the same decal but are dark blue. I think his flash an the camera makes the color brighter.

              Filter Fans,

Here is a non flash photo of the filter with the blue GM box for color comparison. This is a fairly accurate depiction of the color that has passed muster in all the various judging categories. Hope this helps,

                Arland,
Thanks for the photo. It definately seems to be a much lighter blue than the norm. I know this subject is a bit anal and boring but I've been collecting AC filters for a long time and have never seen that lighter blue color with a box before. I have a couple of loose filters with that lighter color but didn't know if they were originals. I learned something today. Thanks

P.S. Could I trouble you to post or email me a photo of the "application" side of the box. That often will identify the approximate vintage of the filter.

I've got a couple I can shoot an image and past for color comparison.

                    Re: 1982 Oil Filter

My research indicates that the large paper label was replaced in 1982 with a label that is1 3/8 inches X 2 3/8 inches with a small AC logo with AC SPARK PLUG under it on the left side and PF-25 on the top portion. The AC logo is red and everything else is blue or white. I have not seen a large label on a filter in a box with a 1982 application although I suppose it is possible because these cosmetic changes were not closely controlled. At this point, it appears that the black filters as original equipment started with the 1984 model but could have started earlier. See my article in Volume 33, Number 2 2006 Restorer, page 18-19. However, the 1982 filter label is incorrectly described as silver background with black letters in the article.
