    1978 Corvette Pace Car decals

    According to the judging manual, these decals should be placed in the back of the car vs. placed on the car doors or rear quarter panels to receive no point deductions. However, the judging manual does not specify what the part number should be on the box or boxes.

    I have a pace car with 2500 miles on it and have talked to the original owner. He says the decals came in one box when he purchased the car. The box has a blue/white GM sticker on the end, "GR. TAPE, STRIPE 1#476282." The "wing" decal has the part number stamped on the back "476284 RR QP" while the door decal is stamped "476283 DOOR EMB."

    You see some of these decals today on eBay that come in two separate boxes. The part numbers on the boxes are the same as the part number on the decals being either 476283 or 476284...probably old GM stock replacement parts.

    So which is correct? One box with 476282 part number? Or two boxes with part numbers 476283 and 476284?

    GM #476282 was a PRODUCTION-only decal UNIT, supplied in the car, that included all of the pace car decals to be installed by the owner or dealer. The decal UNIT was not available in SERVICE. So, if you see one, it had to have been supplied with a car.

    GM #476283 and 476284 were decals that were part of that UNIT. Those part numbers were not used in PRODUCTION (except as part of the above-referenced UNIT) and were once available in SERVICE on a "per each" basis.

      I worked up a table a few years back that shows the assignment of part numbers and a description of the part (decal, instructions, etc) assigned to that number:

      Of course you've got the 284 box...this photo shows all the boxes as Joe described...the SERVICE replacements as sold over the counter.

        Brian;

        I hope this is the information you were looking for. What was that other question you had? Wasn't it about your non-working tachometer? I'll bet that unit is common to a number of C-3's, and certainly others have had a similar problem and can give you some valuable guidance.

          Thanks for the reply Tom. I have the 476282 box that contains all of the decals. The judging manual should be updated to include the decal part number. If you had a car being judged and it had the separate boxes vs. the -282 delivery box, would you deduct any points since that's not how the car came from the manufacturer?

              I would be concerned about the condition of the decals after 30 years. It has been our experience that the older decals are fragile. Although I agree with Mike, I think that I would leave well enough alone.
