54 diff noise

I have a deceleration "howl" coming from my 54's diff. It is a mild "whine" on accel, but a very loud howl on decel.Any ideas on what this could be?

Does anyone have a source for a new 3.55:1 ring/pinion, in case I find them worn?

i wouldn't run the 54 till you've removed, inspected and hopefully just have to re-set up the ring and pinion. while its apart, replace the bearings and seal.good luck,mike

Pinion bearings are worn or you lost pre load, replace all bearings when you get into it. No where in the galaxy will you find NOS ring and pinion and no where in the universe does any one repro them. 53 to 55 Corvette only.
That's why when some one looses the ring & pinion they replace the whole rear assy to a 56 to 62 Corvette.

54 diff noise

I'd certainly try carefully checking for slop on the pinion nut - and therefore, the pinion gear possibly going forward and aft with every different power application, accel, coast, decel. It's about a 10 minute check. If that's is, it could fix it or delay impending disaster - but if nothing else, would act as a diagnostic "tool"... Good luck, DC
