69 rear leaf liners

I just noticed in the JG that there shouldn't be a liner between the last straight and first curved leafs. Is that true or is that an error and there should in fact be a liner between those two leafs?

The reason that I question it is because when I was cutting my new liners to the same length as my old ones I don't remember there being any "missing liners" so if some one could clarify this for me I'd appreciate it.

There was no liner between the uppermost curved leaf and the lowermost "flat" leaf. As a matter of fact, if there had been, the ends of it would have been "flapping around".

As the spring "works" in compression and rebound, the contact between adjacent cambered leaves is "sliding contact", thus the liners; however, the contact between the top of the highest cambered leaf and the bottom of the flat leaf above it is a "rolling contact", thus no liner (which would flap around loose anyway as Joe noted).

Well I'm glad I caught this when I did! Thanks.

I thought it looked funny just sort of laying there but figured that once the weight of the car is on it and the spring flatens out that it would be held in place but maybe not. Regardless, I'll take it out.

Now about tightening the four spring plate bolts...
If I can "compress" the leaf so that it is basicaly flat as it would be once the weight of the car is on it can I then torque two of the bolts, then "compress" the other side the same and then torque the last two bolts or am I asking for trouble?

Just snug them down to hold the spring in place. When you set the car back on the ground, with all the interior in, fill the gas tank at least 1/2 full and then torque the bolts. This is easy to do before your install the spare tire tub

Thanks Dick I think that is good advice.

I just HATE leaving things like this loose(must be the aircraft mechanic in me) but in this case I think I'll flag them so I don't forget and then do them later like you said.

I just want to thank the folks that responded to the spring liner question. I'm doing a '66 and had the same experience. My spring and a spare I had purchased at a swap meet both had liners between all the leaves. Don't know the history of either. The new liners from Ecklers only had 7. When I complained to Ecklers that I was shorted one liner, they sent a second set at no charge. Now I understand that they were right and just didn't know it! Need to put instructions with it! Now I can get it right.

Hi- I have a 69 coupe (350 hp 411 rear)that I ordered (feb 69);5600 mi. car-nothing ever altered- was going to go look at spring/liners,but I'm sure the previous members are right on with diagnosis.There seems to be a possibility of a few anomalies in light of the UAW strike that year.(I did'nt receive my car until oct 30) -Anyway,this car should be a yardstick for some discussion/questions. (I ordered 350 hp,trans ign,side mntd exh,power steer,4 spd trans,am-fm rad,side louver trim,and blk wall tires)
