    BW T10-1C Main Case

    Hi!
I just purchased a main case for my Jan 30, 1961 project car. This is the first main case that I have seen with the letters and numbers in the circles up-side-down. Would this be an early October 10 1960 case (J-10), or could it be for a Chevy 409. Did they stamp the vin number into the cases for non Corvette applications? There are no codes or vin numbers on the flange next to the access cover.

    Ray--
Haven't generally seen those dates upside down, but I wouldn't stay awake worrying about it by any means.
Generally the VIN stamping on passenger cars came later--assembly stamping was used by that point in time. Have fun!!

But that case is made of aluminum. I thought aluminum cases were not introduced until January 1961. If so, how could it have been cast in September 1960? Or was the January introduction strictly limited to Corvettes and other models had them earlier?

            Hi! Mike

I believe the first aluminum T-10 transmission installed in a Corvette was late October or early November 1960. The case in the picture was an Ebay purchase and I have not received it yet. I will be able to inspect it closer once I receive it. I have looked at many aluminum T-10s and this is the first with the information in the circles reversed. I was curious if this may have been one of the first aluminum main cases and may have been cast with a newly designed mold.

              Re: BW T10-1C Main Case

              Ray,

I knew that was the one from ebay as I was looking at it as well. I am glad that someone from the NCRS got it as it seems to be a good deal if it works for you. I have been casually looking for a T10-C case for my late build 1961 for a number of years, with a May/June 1961 cast date the most ideal. Junk hunting gives me a reason to keep going to swap meets. This weekend is Englishtown, NJ. Sometimes one can get lucky especially there as that meet is as much a weekend beer drinking, cookout party and carnival for the bizarre, as it is a swapmeet. Not everyone thinks that their rusty "treasures" on the tarp is worth thousands of dollars. Carlisle has become the land of the sharks, probably due to the cost to get there and to rent a space.

Your observation about the inverted casting dates on the new case material is interesting. Once you receive it I am curious to know what you find. I am likely wrong, but I think that I read somewhere that BW used only the digit "6" for 1960 cases, not "0" or "60". Maybe that applied to another cast component, I am not sure.

              Regards, Mike
