C2 Hood Release Cable install / adjust

Installing a replacement cable assembly (used, stock, not repro or service). There is 3.0 inches of wire protruding from the spiral sheath [don't know if this is factory or whether some has been cut off].

I'd like feedback on what adjustments to make before I bend the wire at the end. The '65 AIM (UPC 11-13, Sht B6) has the following note, ambiguous IMO:

"adjust cable asm. so that there will be 1/8 +/- 1/16 free travel of cable before brass retainer (item 32) is contacted. See item 45 (instruction to "bend wire after asm.")

What do operations and chassis judges normally expect / look for in travel and under-hood configuration ?

Picture on my '65 shows cable end when release T-handle pushed fully in. There's about 1/8" free play (when pulling handle out) before lever / swing arm contacts the hood catch lever/latch (the one with return spring). Shows 0.61" of wire protruding forward of the brass stop. The instructions seem vague to me; should the bend be directly after the stop, or should there be 1/8", or more ? Should the bend in the wire act solely as back-up if the stop set screw allows slippage ? I was thinking of a 3/16" bent length, leaving 0.42" of straight wire between the brass stop and the bend (for future adjusment, if necessary).

Strange; I've R&R'ed these things many times in the 4 decades I've owned C2s (except for a 3 year lapse on a new C3). Back then, if it opened the hood, mission accomplished.

Bend was directly after the Bowden cable exited the brass stop. The crimps were put there for two reasons:

    (1) Less reliance on the integrity of the set screw in the brass stop and

    (2) Keep the potentially sharp end of the cut Bowden cable from being able to pierce the engine compartment wiring harness that's routed nearby.

      Wayne -

Bending the wire end was done with duckbill pliers, so the finished product had the thickness of one jaw between the bend and the stop.
