    1957 chevy ignition switch removal

I apologize since this is a passenger car and not a Corvette.

I am trying to remove the ignition switch from my 57 Bel Air and since I don't have a key (never got one with car), I cannot depress the plunger in the little hole with a pin (my switch does go to off - on - start), any ideas on what I can do now to get the switch off without tearing up my dash?

    Thanks for your help.

    Jim

Not trying to be smart. See a good locksmith.

If you have a few old Briggs & Stratton keys you could jiggle the cylinder and it might turn. There were only a dozen or so combinations. Failing that a locksmith is the next step.

I got lucky. Got a correct original ign switch for our 63, with "the wrong key" a while ago. I was able to pick the lock using a paper clip and one of those dentist picks.

While keeping pressure counterclockwise, I picked around and around......and in about a minute I got it to turn and popped out. I chucked to myself......"Gone in 60 seconds!"

Well, I got out my trusty drill and started drilling. My large bit broke. Now for the chisel, the outer chrome bezel came off and I was able to turn that big outer nut and walla, it is out!

Of course I ruined my lock tumbler but I have a new set for the car so I didn't care.

          Thanks anyway.

tried my 67 car, the car "rejected" it. tried a NOS key blank--not even close!
